科学家们无法解释这种行为，但是明尼阿波利斯的时钟博物馆的研究员以及明尼苏达州自然资源部正在倡导关闭灯光以保护夜间迁徙的鸟儿。
参与这个项目的包括房屋的所有者，承租人以及来自明尼阿波利斯、圣保罗、布卢明顿的32栋建筑物的物业公司，他们俊均承诺在春秋季鸟类迁徙的季节减弱建筑物（景观）灯的强度。类似的项目已经在多伦多、纽约、芝加哥进行。

原因是这样的：
鸟儿在夜间通过星光和鸟儿脑袋方向的夹角来判断方向的。由于星光射到地球近似平行光，根据平行线的同位角定理，鸟儿维持相同的夹角就可以走一条直线。而地面的灯光光线是辐射状的，你可以在纸上画着验证一下，想要让一条线维持和这些辐射线相交时的夹角相同，它肯定是一个螺线。
